Poker is a game of chance and the organiser of a poker tournament may also be prosecuted for breaking gambling laws, Amsterdam’s appeal court has ruled in a case which stretches back nearly 10 years.

Officially, the Netherlands regards poker as a gambling game, meaning the state owned Holland Casino group is the one organisation allowed to organise tournaments. The case centres on three men who organised poker tournaments in a bar in Bussum between 2005 and 2007 with no licence.

Lower court judges in 2010 and 2014 agreed with the defence, which argued poker has become a special game, dependent on tactics, experience and psychology.

It was a protracted weekend in Australia and what better solution to celebrate the birthday of Her Majesty than with a friendly game of poker. It is a game designed for royalty, as kings and queens were tossed across the felt with effortless precision this afternoon. Fifteen loyal servants came together, but they dropped away one-by-one until just one man remained. That man is Sammy Huang and he's now the King of Canberra!

As many kings and queens that we saw at the felt of the Casino Canberra today, it was the unnerving collection of aces that ended up within the hands of Sammy Huang that ultimately was the tale of the day. Flying the flag for the Canberra locals, Huang was a dominant force on a tricky final table through a mix of aggressive play and many those wicked aces! His win was well-deserved and it's great to look the ANZPT Canberra trophy staying in home territory.

We started off this afternoon with Germany's Khiem Nguyen leading the way in which with all eyes at the short stacks to peer who would fall first. Naz Sabaei and Mario Ljubicic were quick to go, before young gun Jarred Graham made a shockingly rapid fall from grace. Graham was unlucky when his ace-king was outdrawn by the ace-jack of Takahiro Morooka and not recovered. Morooka couldn't take advantage of his chips after a ruling technicality went against him to look him next to the cashier. Brett Chalhoub was equally unlucky and when David Gorr was eliminated with a king-high flush against Khiem Nguyen's full house, our final table line up was set within 70 minutes of play.

Khiem Nguyen maintained the chip lead and was always a perilous force at the final table. James Broom entered because the short stack but was relentless in his attack as he endured a rollercoaster ride that will give the weak heart palpitations. Broom needed to come from behind on several all-in clashes including surviving with king-ten against Andrew Watson's ace-queen, after which king-queen against George Graziani's dominant ace-queen.

It was the latter hand that left Graziani crippled and ended in our first elimination of the overall table. Graziani was all in with [ac][6h] against Tristan Bain's [qh][qc] and Tony Kambouroglou's [kh][kc] with the Toothpick taking the pot to land an early double knockout blow.

Andrew Watson lost a race with [ah][qc] against Khiem Nguyen's pocket sevens to be eliminated in seventh place, before a card-dead Luke Edwards couldn't survive with [qc][jd] against Leigh Warne's [ks][5c] to leave in sixth.

While the choice of players were quickly decreasing, Sammy Huang's stack was just getting bigger and bigger, as his overbetting style was playing havoc with the small ball approach of Khiem Nguyen and James Broom. Huang picking up pocket aces with some regularity was also helping the cause, as Nguyen was showing visible signs of frustration.

Leigh Warne was next to move went Toothpick Tony awoke with another big pair when his [qs][qh] proved too strong for Warne's [ah][qc] to go away us four-handed.

Huang was the massive stack and Broom was still nursing the fast stack as a decent four-way battle ensued. The shorties were forced to transport all in on multiple occasions, but they couldn't find any callers because the establishment remained for over an hour. Something needed to give.

As the blinds ticked over, it was Germany's Khiem Nguyen who finally cracked when he three-bet shoved with [4s][4d] but Sammy Huang awoke along with his favourite hand, [as][ac] and made a very easy call. Nguyen couldn't discover a four as his impressive tournament was halted in fourth place.

James Broom found some swagger when play reached three-handed together with his nemesis in Nguyen now at the rails. Broom spread out his game and caught Toothpick Tony red-handed when he squeezed excessive of a raise and contact. Broom tabled [ad][8d] as Toothpick sheepishly showed [5d][4c]. The board ran out [9d][td][ks][jh][tc] to eliminate Toothpick in third place as we entered heads-up play with the title at the line.

James Broom had a two-to-one chip disadvantage against Sammy Huang and despite a unusual Canberra heads-up rule that has the blinds in reverse to normal, Broom was confident in his heads-up game. However he forgot that Huang held all of the aces!

After a preflop raise, and bet at the flop, Huang overbet shoved all in at the activate a [jh][9d][qh][7d] board. Broom deliberated for a while before making the decision with [qd][5d] for prime pair and flush draw, but Huang again opened [as][ah]. Broom was on the lookout for a queen, five or diamond but it surely wasn't to be because the [7s] bricked the board to eliminate him in second place and crown Sammy Huang as our ANZPT Canberra champion!

The Canberra local qualified for this event through one of the crucial $22+R 3xTurbo online satellites on PokerStars for the investment of just $42. He's now turned that right into a whopping $73,700 in prize money!

For poker fans; today had everything.

We witnessed records broken and an indescribable atmosphere as players flooded the poker site here for the third and final opening flight of the Red Dragon.

By the close of late registration it was 512 who joined the quest today. That brought our total as much as 1,075 for a record-breaking Red Dragon field. Not just was today the largest Day 1 flight and confirmed we were some of the biggest iteration of this tournament ever, however it also became the largest-ever freezeout tournament within the whole of the Asia-Pacific.

Of those 512 who did participate today, only 127 would survive the 12 levels of play. Sooner than the pack when all was said and done stood Huitong Cao. He finished with 232,600 prior to Wayne Zhang with 167,600 and Jun Yang Ong on 165,900.

Cao has just one previous live cash to his name from a second place finish in a turbo event back in 2014. With that score awarding him only $4,479 Cao is definitely on his approach to the largest results of his poker career.

Returning tomorrow to sign up for Cao on Day 2 from today's flight can be four previous Red Dragon champions. Yuefeng Pan (95,700), Zhenru Xie (73,400), Raymond Wu (73,000) and Tom Alner (49,000) all finished with chips.

While these lucky players survived the night, for others, it was a special story. Our two representatives for the PokerStars contingent couldn't hold on. Bryan Huang was eliminated earlier after a three-way all in didn't lead to his favour. Also hitting the rail was Yaxi Zhu who lasted until late within the day but just came up short within the end.

We also lost a horde of notable names today with Jason Lo, Aaron Lim, Raiden Kan, Jack Salter and MC HotDog all falling by the wayside.

For the 127 who made the cut, they'll join the qualifiers from the primary two flights back here tomorrow. Play will kick off earlier with a 3:00pm begin to give players an opportunity to wait the MPC24 Welcome Party within the evening.

The Top Online Casino Gambling News Reporting Site Since 2002!

Residents within the state of latest Jersey has been spoiled relating to the liberation of casino gambling, and now it seems that regulators in New Jersey are preparing to offer residents an additional treat this Thanksgiving.

On Monday, regulators announced that they were still on pace to hit their target date of November 26th to launch the states first online casino. The date, just two days before Thanksgiving, will give residents something to appear forward to while they digest their Thanksgiving meals.

The biggest winners within the expansion of online gambling in New Jersey would be the struggling Atlantic City casinos. The AC casinos haven't rebounded from the 2008 economic recession, and are waiting for taking their brands online.

"If New Jersey can meet that November 26th deadline, it will provide an enormous boost for Atlantic City casinos," said analyst Neal Sommerson. "Heading right into a holiday weekend with a brand new product to supply the millions of residents as a way to be home on vacation, should provide casinos with a tight opportunity to place up strong revenue numbers out of the gate."

New jersey is certainly one of three states that experience created online gambling regulation laws over the last two years. Nevada has already launched their first online casino in BETA mode, with a troublesome opening of alternative casinos expected to return within the following few weeks. Delaware has also regulated the industry.

Lawmakers in New Jersey and Nevada have left the door open for pooling their players should federal laws change. Currently, there aren't any federal online gambling regulations. Legislators was pushing for law changes on the federal level before too many states authorize the activity on their own, leaving the government with out a piece of the gambling revenue generated in these states.
