Running it up in the Bahamas

You may be familiar with the commercials for Reese's Peanut Butter Cups - basically somebody happily eating chocolate bumps into somebody happily eating peanut butter, accidentally combining the two foods. At first, they're upset, but then both try the chocolate-peanut butter combo and think, "Wow, this is better than either one separately!"

Which brings me to the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure and Jason Somerville's Twitch show. PokerStars and Jason put their heads together and said, "What if... what if we took Jason's massively popular Twitch show and his over-the-top enthusiasm, and parked them alongside the $100k buy-in Super High Roller and the Main Event at PokerStars' flagship tournament festival?"

Well, that sounded pretty damned exciting. And once we'd gotten that idea, we said, "We could have guest co-commentators. During breaks in the main action, we could have our top Twitch people, including Jason, streaming from right there near the tournament floor."

jason_somerville_team_pokerstars_Pro_29dec15.png

The more we talked, the more it seemed like a great mash-up. So here's what we know: from Friday, January 8th through Thursday January 14th, there's gonna be a room near the tournament floor at the PCA, where Jason Somerville will be commentating on the Super High Roller and Main Event, via the PokerStars Twitch channel. It'll be the same high quality video production you're familiar with on PokerStars.tv, but with the Run It Up vibe, hi-jinx in the chat, and Mr. J Carver himself as the ringleader. Sadly, no mechanical crow (who knew they were illegal in the Bahamas?).

Jason will definitely have various co-commentators in and out. When there's no action in the main events, there will be Other Cool Stuff on the channel, such as Jason, Jaime Staples, and others streaming live. Beyond that, we're not talking. Partially because we want to keep a couple of aces up our sleeve; partially because we don't even know what we might think of once the salt air, conch fritters, and Kalik beers enter our bloodstream.

So on Friday, January 8th, be sure to tune your browser to twitch.tv/pokerstars. In the meantime, we'll be sitting here, eating Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, and thinking of cool things we can do with Twitch at the PCA.

ANZPT Canberra Day 3: Levels 21 & 22 (blinds 10,000-20,000, ante 2,000)

Congratulations Sammy Huang - ANZPT Canberra Main Event champion!

It's great to see a local shine through as Sammy Huang has survived the interstate invasion and steamrolled his way through the final table to claim a memorable victory.

Huang qualified for this event through one of the online $22+R 3xTurbo satellites on PokerStars for the investment of just $42. He's now turned that into an incredible $73,700 in prize money! Congratulations to Sammy on a wonderful achievement which has created a real buzz throughout the Casino Canberra.

That wraps up our live coverage from the tournament floor, but we'll have a complete wrap of the day's action for you very shortly.

ANZPT Canberra champion Sammy Huang

7:25pm: James Broom eliminated in 2nd place; Sammy Huang wins!

The players were deep-stacked but you had a feeling that fireworks could explode at any moment with these two competitive, aggressive players. And so it happened.

James Broom started with a raise to 40,000 the small blind and Sammy Huang flat-called in the big blind (button). The flop landed [jh][9d][qh] and Broom checked it over to Huang who bet 100,000. Broom made the call.

The turn was the [7d] and Broom checked again to Huang who overbet the pot by moving all in! Broom had about 900,000 behind and Huang had him well covered as Broom spent some time in the tank contemplating his decision.

Broom quietly uttered "call" and tabled [qd][5d] for top pair with a flush draw, but incredibly Huang once again held [as][ah].

Broom was left needing a queen, five or diamond to stay alive but the river bricked the [7s]. The courageous run of James Broom ends in 2nd place for $46,900 as our Sammy Huang is crowned the ANZPT Canberra champion!

James Broom eliminated in 2nd place

7:20pm: First blood to Broom

James Broom raised to 40,000 from the small blind before Sammy Huang re-raised to 140,000 in the big blind (button). Broom declared himself all in for around 900,000 and Huang made a reluctant fold.

7:15pm: We're a little backwards in Canberra

James Broom has just made us aware of a unique rule here in Canberra, and he's not too thrilled about it. In Canberra, when heads up, the button is the big blind - basically the reverse of the way heads-up poker is played almost everywhere else in the world.

It means that the button has a huge advantage, and it would be correct for the small blind to play more tight that usual. The small blind acts first preflop, but is then out of position for the rest of the hand.

7:10pm: We're heads up for the title!

This is it! The trophy and $73,700 is on the line as our two players have taken their seats and are ready to go for glory. Here are the chip counts as heads-up play gets underway.

Sammy Huang - 1,745,000
James Broom - 940,000

The cards are back in the air!

7:00pm: Tony Kambouroglou eliminated in 3rd place

James Broom opened with a raise to 40,000 on the button and Sammy Huang called in the small blind. Action was with Tony Kambouroglou in the big blind and he moved all in. Broom instantly called as Huang got out of the way.

Kambouroglou: [5d][4c]
Broom: [ad][8d]

Great read and call by Broom as he knew that Toothpick was on the squeeze and he was rewarded as the board ran out [9d][td][ks][jh][tc]. Toothpick is eliminated in 3rd place and he'll take home $27,470 in prize money.

There will now be a brief pause as we set up the final table for heads-up play.

"Toothpick" Tony Kambouroglou eliminated in 3rd place

6:40pm: Khiem Nguyen eliminated in 4th place

The blinds had kicked up and something had to give to break the stalemate. It was Khiem Nguyen who was the unfortunate soul to be removed from this quartet as Sammy Huang continues on his merry way.

James Broom opened to 45,000 before Nguyen moved all in for 217,000 from the button. After asking for a count, Huang called from the small blind as the other players stepped aside.

Nguyen: [4s][4d]
Huang: [as][ac]

Once again Huang had found the rockets and there were no surprises on the board of [7h][9c][ts][6s][6c]. Nguyen departs in 4th place after a fantastic tournament, collecting $22,780 in prize money. Meanwhile Huang now has well over half the chips in play with over 1.7 million chips.

khiem_nguyen_ft_anzpt_canberra.jpg

Khiem Nguyen eliminated in 4th place

6:35pm: Level up, blinds 10,000-20,000, ante 2,000

6:30pm: Success with a bluff

James Broom opened to 35,000 from the cutoff and Toothpick Tony made the call in the big blind. The flop landed [3s][8h][2s] and Toothpick check-called for 45,000 as the [4c] hit the turn. Toothpick checked it over to Broom who released a second barrel worth 75,000.

Toothpick when into the tank for a very long time - a good three or four minutes - before finally folding. It was the wrong decision as Broom showed [9d][td] for the air ball! Broom is back to 450,000.

6:25pm: Broom gets busy

The action has ground to a halt, with a few shoves by the short stack going uncalled as they battle valiantly to survive.

James Broom's rollercoaster ride continues after losing a pot to chip leader Sammy Huang. Broom has been pretty active but it's one step forwards, two steps back at the moment.

Broom opened to 35,000 and Huang called in the big blind to see a [ah][6s][4d] flop. Huang decided to lead out for 54,000 and Bloom floated a call but was forced to fold when Huang open-shoved on the [th] turn.

6:05pm: Toothpick wins with ace-high

It's been slow going recently with Toothpick Tony just collecting the only notable pot. James Broom had opened to 35,000 and Toothpick called in the big blind to see a [7c][9s][6s] flop.

Both players checked and a repeat [6d] hit the turn. Toothpick checked and Broom took a stab of 50,000. Toothpick looked him up before both players checked the [3c] river. Toothpick opened [ah][4d] for just ace-high but it was enough to take it down. Toothpick is back to 550,000 with Broom at 430,000.

5:45pm: Double double!

James Broom has done it again! Another double up and once again he had to come from behind. Broom open-shoved for 228,000 from the cutoff and Khiem Nguyen made the call on the button.

Broom opened [kh][qd] for live cards against Nguyen's [ac][9c]. However Broom just doesn't seem to miss in these all-in clashes and once again he connected with the board of [3h][qh][jd][6s][ts]. Broom is now back to 460,000 with Nguyen back down to 400,000.

james_broom_ft3_anzpt_canberra.jpg

James Broom is back in business!

5:40pm: Broom doubles in the dark

First hand back from the break, and James Broom open-shoved for 107,000 from the button. Once Sammy Huang made the call in the big blind, Broom admitted he hadn't looked at his cards!

Broom opened [qh][5s] and found himself with one overcard to Huang's [jc][js]. But that's all he needed, as the board was spread [as][8h][qc][8c][tc]. Broom doubles to 225,000 with Huang back to 1.25 million.

5:35pm: Play resumes

The four remaining players are back to battle it out. Here are the approximate chip counts at the break:

Sammy Huang - 1,360,000
Khiem Nguyen - 650,000
Tony Kambouroglou - 560,000
James Broom - 110,000

The cards are once again back in the air!

New Jersey Lawmakers Hashing Out New Casino Plan

Lawmakers in the Garden State want to put casinos outside of Atlantic City in an effort to compete with gambling expansion in neighboring states. However, there is still a lot to work out in terms of how to frame the ballot question next year.

State voters are going to be asked whether to amend the New Jersey Constitution to allow gambling outside of Atlantic City, but it’s unclear which companies would be allowed to own and operate the two new casinos in North Jersey.

According to a report from the Associated Press, competing versions of the proposal in the Senate and Assembly differ with regards to the ownership of the new gambling facilities. Under the Senate bill, both licenses would go to existing Atlantic City casino operators, while the Assembly version would require just one to an existing operator.

The new casinos must be at least 75 miles from Atlantic City, with the proposed locations being the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford and somewhere in Jersey City.

Atlantic City has eight casinos after four closed last year.

“Casino expansion will create jobs and generate economic growth for the entire state,” State Sen. Ray Lesniak, told the AP. “This is an opportunity we have to capitalize on. Democrats and Republicans in the Legislature should work together on a plan that can go to the voters for approval on the next ballot in November of 2016.”

Deutsche Bank estimated that casinos in the northern part of New Jersey could generate more than $500 million in annual revenue.

A casino plan must be approved by a three-fifths vote in the new session beginning Jan. 12.

Last year, Gov. Chris Christie gave Atlantic City a five-year window to rebound from its eight-year-long gaming revenue slump before considering casinos elsewhere in the state. However, gambling expansion has picked up nearby, as Pennsylvania will soon see its 13th casino and New York this month handed out three new casino licenses.

While overall gaming revenue continues to decline, the casinos’ profitability is up big this year. For the first three quarters of 2015, the casinos’ collective gross operating profit was $450.9 million, an increase of 67.5 percent year-over-year.

The New Jersey gambling industry was given a boost recently by news that the state’s online gambling operators took in a record $13.2 million during the month of November, compared to $8.7 million in November 2014.

Since launching in late 2013, New Jersey’s online gaming industry has won $266 million.

MicroMillions 6: fzmas annihilates Courchevel final table to win Event #79 [$3.30 PL Courchevel]
^

I don't speak Swedish, but I think "fzmas" is loosely translated as "terminator." With seven players remaining in MicroMillions Event #79 Pot-limit Courchevel, fzmas took out all six opponents including the final three players in only four hands. That's right, three players liquidated in only four hands. Courchevel must come easy to fzmas, who encountered very little resistance en route to a rather easy victory.

MicroMillions 6 Event #70 $3.30 PL Courchevel attracted 2,493 runners. These bodacious and adventurous Courchevel enthusiasts boosted the prize pool to $7,479.00. The top 320 places paid out with $1,273.45 set aside to the eventual champion.

With nine remaining, action went hand-for-hand. Sweden's fzmas had amassed the biggest stack with 3 million, while two short stacks, Sabr1988 and kuzbass 71, were trying to keep their heads above water with under 500K apiece.

Sabr1988 became the unfortunate "bubble boy" after getting it all-in preflop with [Js] flashing as the door card. Sabr1988's [Ah][Ac][Kc][5s][5h] lost to tapadeli's [Ad][Kh][Jc][9h][6c] when the board ran out [Kd][Qc][Jh][7s][2d]. tapadeli won the pot with two pair and Sabr1988 bubbled off the final table in ninth place. The final table of eight was set.

MM6_E79_FT.jpg

Event #79 - Final Table Chip Counts:
Seat 1: pulya1980 (1,537,172)
Seat 2: tapadeli (1,032,425)
Seat 3: kuzbass 71 (762,078)
Seat 4: hustler1984 (496,763)
Seat 5: avictoria (1,396,307)
Seat 6: ivanvilchez8 (1,747,256)
Seat 7: fzmas (3,067,713)
Seat 8: nastine666 (2,425,286)

The Courchevel final table commenced during Level 41 with blinds at 60K and 120K. fzmas held a firm lead with 3 million, while hustler1984 clung to the short stack with a shade under 500K.

tapadeli eliminated in 8th place

It did not take very long before someone became the first casualty at the final table. With [9d] showing as the door card... pulya1980 min-raised 240,000 and tapadeli called all in for 150,347.

pulya1980: [9c][9h][6h][4s][2d]
tapadeli: [Qd][Qs][Jh][Ts][2c]

The board ran out [9d][8c][2h][5c][3h]. pulya1980 flopped a set of nines, but rivered a six-high straight to win the pot. tapadeli flopped a straight draw, but failed to improve. Argentina's tapadeli became the first player to exit at the final table and hit the road in eighth place, which paid out $74.79.

hustler198 eliminated in 7th place

Canada's hustler198 was on life support after getting crippled and nearly obliterated in a previous hand. The hand that finally did him in... the [7d] was the door card, so big-stacked bully fzmas opened to a heady raise of 420,000, super-short hustler1984 called all-in 66,763, and avictoria also called (fzma's original raise) from the big blind. Three-handed. On a flop of [7d][7s][3h], fzmas fired out 97,676 and avictoria foled. Heads-up. Both players tabled their cards:

fzmas: [7c][6s][5h][5d][4s]
hustler1984: [Ad][Qc][9h][8d][6c]

The turn was the [6h] and the river was the [3s]. fzmas flopped trips and turned a full house to win the pot. hustler1984 could only muster up two pair -- sevens and sixes. For a seventh-place finish, hustler1984 collected $149.58.

ivanvilchez8 eliminated in 6th place

On first street, the [9s] was visible. ivanvilchez8 opened to 490,000, fzmas bumped it up to 1,610,000, and ivanvilchez8 called all-in 467,256.

fzmas: [Ad][Ah][7c][7h][3d]
ivanvilchez8: [Ac][Kc][Qc][Qd][8h]

fzmas was ahead with Aces against Queens. The board ran out [9s][6s][4h][4s][Tc]. Both players only improved to two pair, but fzmas's two pair (Aces and fours) was superior to ivanvilchez8's two pair (Queens and fours). Argentina's ivanvilchez8 busted out in sixth place, which paid out $224.37.

kuzbass eliminated in 5th place

Another shorty bid goodbye. With [9c] showing on first street, short-stacked kuzbass 71 open-shoved for 174,156 and both fzmas and nastine666 called. On a flop of [Jd][9c][8h], fzmas fired out 480,000 and nastine666 bailed. Heads-up.

fzmas: [Kc][Qc][Ts][8d][5d]
kuzbass 71: [Ac][Kd][9d][5h][4d]

fzmas flopped a straight and kuzbass 71 was in deep trouble. The turn was the [3h] and the river was the [Js]. kuzbass 71's two pair was no match against fzmas's Queen-high straight. fzmas dragged the pot and added more chips to his big stack. Russia's kuzbass 71 went busto in fifth place, which paid out $373.95.

avictoria eliminated in 4th place

Four-handed went quick. If you blinked, you missed the action. The [8c] was the door card. avictoria opened to 700,000, fzmas bumped it up to 2.3 million, and avictoria called all-in for 936,307.

fzmas: [Qc][Qd][Th][8d][7c]
avictoria: [Ks][Qs][Qh][Jc][5d]

The board ran out [9c][8c][7d][3s][2c]. Unfortunately, avictoria did not improve on a pair of Queens and lost to fzmas's rivered Queen-high flush. Germany's avictoria took home $523.53 for a fourth-place finish.

nastine666 eliminated in 3rd place

On the very next hand, Brazil's nastine666 met an unfortunate fate. Guess what appeared as the door card? Yes, another ominousrominous nine! The [9d] was exposed on first street, fzmas opened to 700,000, nastine666 bombed it all-in for 2,011,130, and fzmas called.

nastine666: [Kd][Qh][9h][7d][4s]
fzmas: [Ac][Qc][9c][8c][3d]

The board ran out [Js][Jd][9d][5s][8h]. Both players had two pair -- Jacks and nines -- however, fzmas held an Ace-kicker and won the pot. Belarus' nastine666 busted out in third place, which paid out $707.81.

HEADS-UP: pulya1980 (Russia) vs. fzmas (Sweden)
Seat 1: pulya1980 (2,617,519 in chips)
Seat 7: fzmas (9,847,481 in chips)

With two remaining, fzmas held a commanding lead approximately 4-to-1, however. Although heads-up only lasted two hands, fzmas lost the first pot and coughed up a major advantage.

pulya1980 eliminated in 2nd place; fzmas is the new Courchevel champion!

On the first hand of heads up, pulya1980 avoided a quickie elimination and doubled up. pulya1980 won the first pot with full boat holding [Ac][Ks][Qc][6d][6c] against fzmas' [As][8c][7s][4s][3h] after the board ran out [Ad][Qs][Qd][Jd][4h]. pulya1980 dodged a bullet, as fzmas' lead was trimmed to only two million (7.2 million to 5.2 million).

Despite the initial setback, fzmas stopped pulya1980's comeback dead cold. On the second hand of heads-up, delivered a knock-out blow.

On the final hand of the tournament, fzmas flopped a flush and that's all she wrote. Another nine as the door card, with the [9s] exposed on first street. fzmas raised to 600,000, pulya1980 bumped it up to 1,400,000, and fzmas called. The flop was [Js][9s][4s]. pulya1980 fired out 2,800,000, and fzmas called. The turn was the [5c], pulya1980 bet 1,035,038, and fzmas called.

pulya1980: [Qh][9d][9c][5d][2c]
fzmas: [Qc][Jc][Ts][6s][2d]

The [Td] fell on the river, which did not held pulya1980. fzmas won the hand with a flopped flush.

For a soulful and hard-nosed runner-up performance, Russia's pulya1980 collected $897.48.

Congrats to Sweden's fzmas for winning Event #79 Courchevel and taking home a first-place prize worth $1,273.45.

MicroMillions-079 $3.30 PL Courchevel
