Poker tournaments around the world seem to follow the trend that the final Day 1 flight is always the largest. That is certainly true at PokerStars LIVE Macau and it was definitely the case on Day 1d of the MPC22 Red Dragon Main Event.
The day started with around 350 players at the tables which put the poker room at maximum capacity. That didn't stop dozens of players from filtering in and ponying up HK$12,000 (~US$1,550), however, and so the tournament had to resort to alternates - a method whereby players wait in the wings for seats to free up.
In the end, once everyone was seated, there were a massive 444 entrants. When added with the first three Day 1 flight, the total field was set at 987 unique players. That's just eight less than the record of 995 who played MPC20 in January last year.
That field created a prize pool of HK$10,339,812 (~US$1,330,000) and it's the top 117 players who will share in a piece of that cash. Making the money will guarantee players HK$24,600 (~US$3,100), while a spot at the final table is worth HK$174,000 (~US23,200).
The eventual champion will pocket a massive HK$2,199,000 (~US$293,000).

While it's fun to talk about the money, it's important to praise the success of the 131 players who made it through Day 1d and kept themselves in contention for Red Dragon glory.

Not everyone was as fortunate as the aforementioned players with dozens hitting the rail throughout Day 1d. One of those who was eliminated throughout the action was Team PokerStars Pro Vivian Im.
Im was short stacked quite early in the day, but managed to double up with [4c][4s] against an opponent's [ac][jd]. Not too long after this, however, Im would shove 10 big blinds in the middle with pocket sixes and run into pocket kings. Just like that, it was all over.
Im was one of five Team PokerStars Pros who played this event over the four Day 1 flights and of those it was only Japan's Kosei Ichinose who made it through to Day 2.
Ichinose and the 285 total players who are still in the tournament will now return from 5:00pm local time on Wednesday and start playing towards the money bubble. Be sure to join us on the PokerStars Macau page to continue following live updates of the MPC22 Red Dragon!
