There are a large number of bloggers, fans, family and friends watching the players do their thing here on the PCA, but one man has a larger audience than all of these combined.
Team PokerStars Pro Jason Somerville has 10,000 people watching him right now.
No, there is no such thing as a sea of individuals all looking to squeeze around his table and watch him 3-bet. In fact, he isn't playing live poker in any respect. Jason Somerville is live streaming the PCA Main Event on his Twitch channel, and his audience is building well into the five figures.
You could be thinking, how is Somerville's stream different to EPT Live? Well, who better to give an explanation for than the person himself.
"I think the Run It Up live stream is a smart complement to EPT Live," Somerville told us on his dinner break. "We're engaging with the viewers; I'm having a talk with the Twitch viewers.
"There's a joke that we're calling it the "Twitch language" stream, but it surely also isn't in a large number of ways. A hand might be happening and I WILL BE like "NotLikeThis", "FeelsBadMan", "KappaPride" - nobody else knows what that means, but Twitch knows what that suggests! Y'know, that has an excessively distinct Twitch, the debate and the language of the culture there, and that's the reason an overly significant thing."
10,000-plus people is definitely significant. Somerville believes Run It Up's success is right down to two things.
"I think it is a testament to the stream being very entertaining, but it is usually because there's someone like me hosting who can understand both the poker action happening and translate that to someone who plays video games.
"I bet there's a healthy percentage of individuals watching at this time who've never heard of the PCA before. I've needed to explain what the PCA is a ton of times these previous few days. We're showcasing this to those that have never seen it before, and they are like "Oh, this looks such a lot fun! I WILL NOT wait to come back next year!" That's awesome. Especially as we continue to peer poker expand, particularly within the Usa where numerous my viewership is from, I FEEL it's going to help to grow both live and online poker. I've seen that all year long with the regular Run It Up stream."
So when you haven't tuned in to runitup.tv yet, what better time to start out? Somerville has up to now been joined by Liv Boeree, ElkY, Nanonoko, Jaime Staples and Barry Greenstein, assisting him in delivering poker expertise and breaking down hands for the viewers. All while keeping it fun.
"What a pantheon on poker wizards!" Somerville said excitedly. "It's great having those guys come by, as lots of my fans have no idea who those guys are. In fact they know Jaime more or less, but everyone else they may not have heard of. In case you are a 20-year-old from Sweden, maybe you've never heard of Barry Greenstein before; so introducing him to a brand new audience and having him tell stories from the old days - that's awesome needless to say. It's great content, I think."
We couldn't agree more. It is so good, in fact, that Somerville is taking the Run It Up Stream over to the Aussie Millions in a bit of under two weeks.
"This is an experiment in lots of ways. I've never done a live stream like this before, and neither has PokerStars in lots of ways. So I've learned numerous lessons here that I WILL take with me to the long run in general, but in addition to the Aussie Millions where I WILL BE live streaming exclusively on runitup.tv 12 days from now."
