The decline in action at the top stakes this week continued as the key figures wound down their play for the holidays. There was no single hand in excess of 1B chips at the 5M/10M tables. However it was not quiet all through the house - there was plenty stirring one step down at the 2.5M/5M games.
The two biggest pots of the week both came on Christmas day. The bar was set in the morning by 'GQ Jay29' who took down a three way pot against 'Cloud_Hsieh' and 'viziato1991' worth 3.06B chips.
He opened the action by raising with [Kd][Qd] and then called when facing a re-raise from 'Cloud_Hsieh'. All three players saw a flop composed of three low diamonds and 'Cloud_Hsieh' bet out. 'GQ Jay29' elected not to play it slow and moved all in - getting a quick call once 'viziato1991' folded. The made flush was up against pocket jacks (an overpair), with a lower flush draw. There was no miracle escape for 'Cloud_Hsieh' and the chips went to 'GQ Jay29'.
Then just 12 hours later 'haha_toiletp' produced a pot less than a single big blind larger to take the biggest pot of the week (also 3.06B chips). Once again it involved 'viziato1991' and pocket jacks, but this time in the hands of our protagonist. The hand was 4-bet pre-flop and the board brought something for both players - undercards for 'haha_toiletp' and top pair for 'viziato1991'. Neither player was willing to slow down so all the chips went in before the turn. Neither player improved from there so 'haha_toiletp' claimed the pot.
Those two hands were big enough to claim 9th and 10th on the all-time list, which is now entirely composed of pots in excess of 3B chips! There were also monster pots for 'FunBrunette', 'littletarzan' & 'Kleppr'.
It was a record breaking week one step down at the 1M/2M level - with comfortably the biggest ever recorded pot at those stakes (26th on the all-time list). It came in a hand between two gigantic stacks on December 26. '3rdWind' went into the game with over 900 big blinds and his opponent 'oscar due234' was just short of 600 big blinds. Both must have had quite the session because you can't join the tables with more than 100 big blinds - you have to build up from there.
'3rdWind' got the action started by raising with his KdKs. 'oscar due234' looked down to find QsQd and played right back at his opponent. Five raises in total took place before the flop brought a dry board of rainbow undercards - the rest of the chips went in. The turn and river both came in low and so the pocket kings held up. All 2.4B chips went to '3rdWind'.
The honour for biggest pot at 1M/2M and the biggest Omaha hand of the week goes to 'johncarlo111'. It was a six-handed pot and five of the participants found themselves with playable hands. After several raises and short-stack all-ins the pot had reached 681M chips. 'johncarlo111' flopped a nine high nut-straight and the board never developed into anything more dangerous, so he scooped everything.
