At the beginning of Day 1 of the 2014 ACOP Main Event we asked APPT President Danny McDonagh what number of entrants he was expecting. He told us 250 and that number would make him more than happy.
Well, by the point seven levels were over at the opening day, 286 players had ponied up the HK$100,000 (~US$13,000) buy-in and registration continues to be open until the start of Day 2.
McDonagh was happy.
"This number is huge," McDonagh said. "Every event here at PokerStars LIVE Macau has exceeded expectation and with a record number at ANZPT Melbourne and great numbers at ANZPT Perth and the Aussie Millions, it's just been an ideal year all round."
It is probably going that there'll be one or two entrants before Day 2 begins, but regardless, that is the second one time within the event's three-year history that the numbers have gone up. There have been 184 entrants within the inaugural year, 203 last year and now somewhere nearing 290.
That's a greater than 40% increase on last year's field.
These forms of numbers aren't only good for PokerStars LIVE Macau, also they are great for the players considering they are going to be capable of have a crack at sharing in a prize pool with a purpose to be around HK$28 million (~US$3.6 million). The official entrants can be confirmed shortly after Day 2 begins.
While it is all fun and games to speak about the money up for grabs in this sort of massive poker tournament like this, it's a must to needless to say we're great distance clear of the cash being within the equation.
Players started the tournament with 30,000 in chips, the primary four levels lasted 60 minutes and the following three lasted 90 minutes - just as they'll for the remainder of the tournament. It's certainly an excellent slow structure for the players.
But regardless of how good the structure, sometimes coolers happen similar to they did to Team PokerStars Pro Vivian Im as she was one of the most first players eliminated from the tournament.
It was in the course of the first level that Im found herself with bottom set on a 3♣Q♦6♥ flop and bumped into Chen Man Hang's middle set. No help came for Im and it was a snappy exit for the South Korean Team PokerStars Pro.
Im wasn't the one Team PokerStars Pro eliminated on Day 1. Team Online member Randy Lew was also sidelined. Lew was actually eliminated by the hands of the eventual chip leader Rory Young.
It was late within the day and Lew cold four-bet jammed within the big blind with ace-king. Young, who was the three-bettor, called it off with a dominated king-queen, but ended up creating a king-high straight to send Lew to the rail and notice himself soar into the chip lead.
Young has had a really perfect 2014, recently winning a WSOP gold bracelet within the Dealer's Choice event at Crown Casino and likewise having made the general table of ANZPT Sydney early within the year.
Young will begin Day 2 with 150,100 in chips that's prior to reigning Asia Player of the Year Jian Yang (147,600), high roller specialist Daniel Colman (102,900) and Joseph Cheong (94,300).
Considering the sphere was so large and there have been such a lot of big names within the field it's no surprise that names like Terrence Chan, Connor Drinan, Joe Hachem and Team PokerStars Pros Bertrand Grospellier and Celina Lin were only a handful of the notables who bagged chips on the end of Day 2.
The 172 total survivors will return to the felt from 3:00 p.m. local time on Wednesday and continue playing towards an ACOP champion, along side continuing the maddening quest for the Asia Player of the Year.
There may be five levels on Day 2, then the players will head off to the (in)famous ACOP player's party poolside on the Hard Rock.
Until then, it is possible for you to to determine Day 1 played out, and an entire Day 2 seating draw and chip counts, within the live reports section on the top of the 2014 ACOP page.
