zen_mec transcends 1/7/14 Super Tuesday field, wins $102,980

Last week we were recapping a year's worth of Super Tuesdays, noting how during 2013 the typical turnout for PokerStars' weekly $1,050 no-limit hold'em tournament was a little bit greater than 537 with fields of greater than 600 happening a minimum of 11 times.

The first Super Tuesday of 2014 kept up the pace nicely with 542 taking part, thereby building a prize pool of $542,000 that crushed the event's $300K guarantee. And after just a little over 11 hours it was zen mec of Belgium claiming the largest share of that prize pool after earning the victory and a large $102,980 first prize.

It took somewhat over five hours for the tourney to minimize to 63 players and the money bubble to burst, at which point three players -- IndaFirst, Damián "pampa27" Salas, and NhFy -- occupied the highest spots with close-to-even stacks of greater than 150,000, with Kyle "KJulius10" Julius the closest challenger in fourth position with about 80,000.

It would take another two hours before just 18 remained, with the similar three players still within the top spots -- NhFy in first with about 375,000, IdnaFirst next with a bit under 300,000, and Damián "pampa27" Salas third with about 265,000.

Meanwhile Kyle "KJulius10" Julius had slipped to below the average, and after Magardan went out in 18th, Julius was eliminated in 17th followed by Pthelegend in 16th, with all three earning $4,336 for his or her finishes.

Next out were prebz (15th), Godfatti (14th), and koivu18 (13th), each doing away with $5,420 apiece. The eight-hour break then came and went, and then Sam7717 (12th) and AllinWinner1 (11th) were knocked out, picking up $6,504 each.

Some time later IndaFirst had slipped a bit within the counts, then suffered a large setback after losing a preflop all in with J♦J♠ versus mwnnj's T♠T♣ when a 10 came a few of the community cards.

That left IndaFirst short-stacked, and after pushing all in once or twice and getting no callers, IndaFirst reraised all in again for approximately 11 big blinds over a zen mec open and got called. zen mec had K♣J♣ and IndaFirst but 7♣3♥, and when the board brought a few kings and no help for IndaFirst, the latter was out in 10th for $6,504.

With the nine-hour break drawing near, the general table was underway with zen mec having moved into first position at the strength of that knockout of IndaFirst.

Seat 5: Powergolf (Denmark) -- 152,402
Seat 6: Damián "pampa27" Salas (Argentina) -- 311,590

Seat 8: Tyren0 (Netherlands) -- 431,622
Seat 9: NhFy (Sweden) -- 396,803

It was about 10 minutes after the nine-hour break when the primary final table elimination occurred.

With the blinds 4,000/8,000, ministerborg opened with an all-in raise to 74,468 and got one caller in zen mec playing from the cutoff seat. ministerborg had J♠9♠ and zen mec A♣8♦, and after the community cards came Q♠T♣3♥6♥4♣ they were all the way down to eight.

About 20 minutes later the blinds were as much as 4,500/9,000 when Tyren0 pushed for 157,063 from the cutoff seat and NhFy called from the button. Tyren0 had K♠Q♣ and NhFy A♥T♥. The board came 2♥6♥6♦, then 3♦, then 9♥, giving NhFy a flush and knocking Tyren0 out in eighth.

Two hands later Damián "pampa27" Salas opened with a 2x raise to 18,000 from under the gun and only Powergolf called from the large blind. The flop came K♠9♦4♥. Powergolf checked, Salas bet 16,222, and Powergolf called. The turn then brought the A♣ and another check from Powergolf. Salas pushed all on this time for 65,340 and Powergolf was quick with the call.

Salas had but J♠3♦ while Powergolf had two pair with A♦9♣, meaning Salas was already drawing dead when the 3♠ fell at the river, ending pampa27's run in seventh.

Five hands after that one it was gonti89 shoving all in from early position for 144,958 (nearly 14-and-a-half big blinds) with A♥T♦ and getting called from a seat over by NhFy who had picked up A♠K♠. The board rolled out J♦K♦A♣7♣5♦ to offer NhFy two pair and send gonti89 railward in sixth.

Just after the 10-hour mark the blinds were 6,000/12,000 when NhFy open-shoved for 199,099 from the button and GhostCapo called from the small blind. NhFy had J♦T♦ and needed help versus GhostCapo's A♦A♣. The flop came 3♣5♦J♣ to pair NhFy once, however the turn was the 6♠ and river the 9♣ and NhFy was eliminated in fifth.

The final four battled another half-hour, with zen mec increasing the lead by pushing up on the subject of 1.36 million while GhostCapo sat in second with lower than half that stack with just over 640,000, mwnnj in third with about 445,000, and Powergolf fourth with somewhat over 263,000. Then came two knockouts on successive hands to establish heads-up play.

With the blinds at 8,000/16,000, Powergolf opened for 40,000 from the button, zen mec shoved from the massive blind, and Powergolf called all in with the 221,462 left behind. Both had pairs, but Powergolf's 4♣4♦ was well behind zen mec's 9♣9♠. Four spades came on some of the five community cards -- 7♠8♠6♠J♠5♣ -- giving zen mec a flush and knocking Powergolf out in fourth.

The next hand then saw GhostCapo min-raise to 32,000 from the button, zen mec three-bet to 79,779 from the small blind, GhostCapo make it 149,588 to go, zen mec push all in, and GhostCapo call with the 479,153 to be all in for 630,741 total.

zen mec: A♦J♠
GhostCapo: 9♥9♠

This time it might be zen mec beating an opponent's nines because the board came T♣6♥A♣8♣Q♥ to present zen mec the simpler pair and knock out GhostCapo in third.

Heads-up play began with zen mec enjoying a large advantage with 2,284,030 to mwnnj's 425,970.

They'd play a bit of over a dozen hands, then mwnnj doubled up with Q♥Q♠ through zen mec's A♥T♥. Another 20 hands would pass, then mwnnj picked up another decent-sized pot after turning a straight, and slightly later picked up a pair more pots to transport up over 900,000.

By the tourney's 11-hour mark they'd been at it for just about a half-hour with zen mec still well ahead with 1,918,655 to mwnnj's 791,345. Only a few minutes later zen mec had mwnnj backpedal under 500,000 when the tourney's final hand took place.

The blinds were as much as 10,000/20,000 and mwnnj opened for 40,000 from the button. zen mec responded with a reraise to 91,115, and after mwnnj shoved for 433,345 total, zen mec called instantly.

mwnnj had picked up an ace with A♠2♠, but zen mec had hold'em's second-best starting hand with K♣K♥.

The flop came 5♠7♥K♦ to enhance zen mec further to a set, however the 3♥ at the turn did give mwnnj outs to a wheel. The river was the 9♣, however, and it was in every single place... zen mec had won!
